WorkSafe Saskatchewan launches 2018 Youth Video Contest

NEWS RELEASE For immediate release September 12, 2017 Regina, SK – Lights, camera, action! WorkSafe Saskatchewan’s annual Youth Video Contest for Saskatchewan students in Grade 9 to 12 is now open. Students who create a safety video have a chance to win some big prizes for themselves and for their school. The purpose of the contest is to encourage students to learn about workplace safety. By inspiring young people to focus on safety, youth become aware of the hazards around them. They also learn that just like other workers, they have rights and responsibilities in the workplace. New construction safety app launched in Sask.

Information about Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations is at your fingertips now more than ever. The Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association (SCSA) has recently developed and launched a new app that highlights the main OHS legislation as it relates to the construction sector. Covering 20 different parts of OHS legislation, the app uses plain, easy-to-understand language to help ensure that employees and coworkers can no longer say, “I didn’t know” about onsite safety. Links to the legislation and other resources and training are also included in the app. The OHS regulations and Saskatchewan Employment Act are more than 500 pages in length. The app was developed in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) and has a web-based and mobile version. Workplace Violence 5th Highest Cause of Injury in Saskatchewan

Violence responsible for 4% of workplace injuries reported to WCB in 2016 936 claims reported due to violence 2 workplace deaths in 2016 due to violence REGINA, SK – The Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) and the Saskatchewan Association of Safe Workplaces in Health (SASWH) announced a province-wide initiative today to address workplace injuries due to violence. “Workers shouldn’t go to work and feel threatened by violence,” says Shelly McFadden, Director of Prevention at the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB). “That’s why the WCB is partnering in this violence prevention initiative.” There were 936 claims reported to the WCB due to violence in 2016. Regina, SK: WorkSafe Saskatchewan is pleased to announce the 2017 Youth Video Contest winners. WorkSafe Saskatchewan invited Saskatchewan filmmakers in Grades 9 to 12 to create a 2-minute video using the theme “Focus on Safety”. This April and May, communities across Canada will don yellow t-shirts and walk 5K to support families affected by workplace tragedy. The Steps for Life Walk is the primary fundraising event for Threads of Life. The money raised supports programs and services for families who have suffered a workplace loss. 2017 Safe Worker and Safe Employer Awards presented

WorkSafe Saskatchewan presented the 2017 Safe Worker and Safe Employer Awards today in Saskatoon. 2017 Safe Worker Award WorkSafe Saskatchewan presents the Safe Worker award to a worker who goes beyond the expectations of their position to help create a safer workplace. The 2017 WorkSafe Saskatchewan Safe Worker award winner is Heidi McCaskill, a parts person with Cervus Equipment Peterbilt, Regina, SK. Heidi is the worker co-chair on the Cervus Equipment occupational health and safety committee. Heidi is always looking for ways to improve the safety culture at Cervus. She implemented the project to repaint the pit shop with traction paint. She has instituted safety signage and orders the appropriate safety supplies within budget. Heidi maintains the equipment that keeps her co-workers safe, including fire extinguishers, eye wash units and replacing face and grinder guards when necessary. Saskatchewan’s 2016 workplace time loss injury rate lowest in 64 years

Total injury rate drops 11.9% from 2015 • Total injury rate 5.55% • Time Loss injury rate 1.86% • 85.7% of rate codes have a lower total injury rate than in 2015 • 88% of Saskatchewan employers achieved zero injuries • Saskatchewan 3rd-highest in Canada for workplace injuries The Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) officially released its 2016 injury rates. The total workplace injury rate for 2016 was 5.55 per cent, an 11.9 per cent drop from 2015, and a significant decrease from 2008 when the total injury rate was 10.21 per cent. The Time Loss injury rate decreased from 2.07 per cent to 1.86 per cent. Time loss claims fell by 604 claims to 7,813. Total claims fell 2,220 from 2015, an 8.69 per cent decrease.
