Ryan Bast, a safety advisor with the Motor Safety Association, has been selected from over 116 nominees from around the world as one of the 2015 National Safety Council ‘Rising Stars of Safety’ elite group. Ryan joins the top ‘40 under 40’ group.
WorkSafe Saskatchewan is pleased to announce a donation today to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind - Saskatchewan (CNIB). WorkSafe Saskatchewan, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Weber Supply, 3M Canada and Federated Co-op are donating $134,487.45 to the CNIB, the largest single campaign donation the local office has ever received.
Four high school students are premiering their winning films today at the May Theatre in Lloydminster. WorkSafe Saskatchewan will be on hand to present the school and students with cash prizes. The students are the second and third place winners of the WorkSafe Saskatchewan Youth Video Contest.
Safe Saskatchewan continued its momentum towards changing Saskatchewan’s safety culture today as the organization announced the addition of 51 business, government and community leaders to the Saskatchewan Health and Safety Leadership Charter. “For decades, Saskatchewan has suffered the toll of an epidemic of preventable injury but, year after year, we are seeing that change for the better. As many parents encourage their teen-aged children to find summer jobs, here’s something to think about. How safe is that workplace? And if it’s not safe is your teenager prepared to speak up about it? A study, co-authored by Dr. Sean Tucker, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration, shows that teens – even those as young as 15 and 16 years of age – have suggestions for how to improve workplace safety but usually only speak up "under certain conditions," says Dr. Tucker. “We found that teens were more likely to speak up and share safety-related ideas with their supervisor when they also had an emotional attachment to their workplace.” This challenges two notions: One, that teens aren’t committed or loyal in short-term part time jobs, and, two, that because teens are inexperienced they don’t think about safety on the job. “A key finding from our study is [...]

The WorkSafe Saskatchewan Street Team is coming to Saskatchewan Polytechnic campuses in April. Young workers have many of the same on-the-job risks as adults, but they are more likely to be hurt in the workplace than adults. On average, three young people in Saskatchewan die on the job each year. Why? The three main causes of injury and death are: Lack of supervision and/or training. Minimal knowledge of rights and responsibilities. Lack of experience in recognizing hazardous situations. Almost half of the students at the event will be given red shirts to wear, signifying that almost half of the injuries to young workers are cuts, burns and crush injuries to their hands. Another ten per cent will be wearing blue shirts, depicting the per cent of injuries that affect young workers’ eyes and vision. Other students will be in grey, green, yellow and black. WorkSafe Saskatchewan presented its 2015 Safe Worker and Safe Employer Awards today in Saskatoon. 2015 Safe Worker Award The 2015 WorkSafe Saskatchewan Safe Worker award winner is Lorna Hamilton, Continuing Care Assistant, Kelvindell Lodge, Kelsey Trail Health Region, Kelvington, SK. The two finalists for the 2015 Safe Worker Award are Lisa Reddekopp, Customer Service Representative, Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming, and Paul Price, Youth Facility Worker, North Battleford Youth Centre. Hamilton was nominated by her co-workers for being a persistent advocate for safety. In the application, they said Hamilton takes it upon herself to research the latest information in injury prevention and health care. Her co-workers often go to her as a resource. Today, the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) officially released its 2014 injury rates. The data indicates a further decrease in the overall workplace injury rate despite an increase in the number of workers. In 2014, there were 402,894 Saskatchewan workers covered by WCB, over 4,000 more workers than the previous year. The WCB’s Vice President of Prevention, Phil Germain, agrees that while more work must be done to bring our injury rates down, the progress made over the past decade is very encouraging. “Last year, our Total injury rate in Saskatchewan was 7.80 per cent. We set a goal for 2014 of 7.50 percent”, Germain said. “As of December 31, 2014 we surpassed that target. The Total injury rate for 2014 was 6.99 per cent.
