Today, WorkSafe Saskatchewan presented its 2014 Safe Worker and Safe Employer Awards.
2014 Safe Worker Award
The 2014 WorkSafe Saskatchewan Safe Worker award winner is Calvin Greenstien, from Novozymes BioAg. The two finalists for the 2014 Safe Worker Award were Shane Kivol of Mosaic, and Debra Bowman, of Kerrobert Integrated Health Care.
Calvin was nominated for looking into the ergonomics of Novozymes’s loading docks where heavy forklift traffic was congesting a confined area. In addition, loading product involved using a forklift to suspend thousand kilogram bags over the workers. Thanks to Calvin’s efforts, the safety and workflow of the loading line improved dramatically and incidents and injuries have been eliminated.
The WorkSafe Saskatchewan Safe Worker award is given to a worker who helps create a safer workplace by identifying hazards and introducing new safety initiatives.
2014 Safe Employer Award
The 2014 Safe Employer winner is Cenovus, Weyburn. The two finalists for the 2014 Safe Employer Award were LK Auto, Regina and The Canadian Salt Company, Belle Plaine.
Cenovus is committed to employee engagement. Safety is threaded throughout their organization and the communities where they work. Cenovus has a strong hazard identification and risk assessment process that it uses in every task.
The WorkSafe Saskatchewan Safe Employer award is given to an employer who shows leadership in health and safety.
Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board Chairperson Gord Dobrowolsky said, “When workers focus on the health and safety of not just themselves but those they work with, attaining our goal of Zero Injuries, Zero Fatalities Zero Suffering becomes a reality.”
“Cenovus and Calvin are great examples of how implementing strategies to reduce risks and hazards in the workplace can make a difference in injury prevention,” said Mike Carr, Deputy Minister for Labour Relations and Workplace Safety. “It’s important that all Saskatchewan employers and workers continue to make safe work practices a priority.”
