The WorkSafe Saskatchewan Street Team is coming to Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Moose Jaw campus at noon on October 26.
The Street Team was at the campus in April with speaker Curtis Weber and has been invited back to speak to students about workplace safety.
Young workers have many of the same on-the-job risks as adults, but they are more likely to be hurt in the workplace than adults. On average, 6,000 people under the age of 25 are injured on the job in Saskatchewan each year.
Curtis Weber will be speaking at the event. Curtis was on the third day of a summer job when he was injured at the age of 17. He was electrocuted three times and became a double-amputee. Curtis says, “I was afraid to speak up and look stupid, and I was afraid I would lose my job. Looking back, it would have been better to take the time and risk looking dumb than to stand here as a double-amputee.”
Almost half of the students at the event will be given red shirts to wear, signifying that almost half of the injuries to young workers are cuts, burns and crush injuries to their hands. Another ten per cent will be wearing blue shirts, depicting the per cent of injuries that affect young workers’ eyes and vision. Other students will be in grey, green, yellow and black.
